Afraid of Martian Invasion?  the politicus 11:46:16 |
 | For the first time in history a Nato summit is held on the territory of the former Soviet Union, in the Latvian capital of Riga.
"If we were invaded...from Mars I would expect the Nato alliance to immediately react and to take all measures to defend us," said Mrs Vike-Freiburga, the Latvian president. "This is absolutely the fundamental principle of the alliance and if ever the alliance falls down on it, the alliance collapses."
I don't know whether the daughter of a Lettish Nazist is really afraid of a Martian invasion or any kind of divine retribution, but she deserves it for suppressing up to 40% of Latvian citizens who are Russians by blood, language and religion.
Turkey was denied membership in the EU because of its refusal to admit the genpcide of the Armenian population in the early 20th century. Yet, Latvia becomes member of the world's democratic goody-goody alliance and now hosts the summit. |

Politics vs the Supernatural
One of the political figures that really attracts my attention is Colin Powell, the most probable candidate for the presidency in 2008. What can his presidentship bring to the people of the US? Will it be the Golden Age or the Dark Time? For the one thing, as many of you know, Mr Powell is known as a stern man of principle, an extremely popular ex-military man, and a very straightforward person who never hesitates to call things by their proper names. He often critisized the civilian administration for trying to correct the foreign policy's mistakes by means of the Armed Forces. And the "Powell's doctrine" has gained a great success in the US. The questions posed by the Powell Doctrine, which should be answered affirmatively before military action, are:
Is a vital national security interest threatened?
Do we have a clear attainable objective?
Have the risks and costs been fully and frankly analyzed?
Have all other non-violent policy means been fully exhausted?
Is there a plausible exit strategy to avoid endless entanglement?
Have the consequences of our action been fully considered?
Is the action supported by the American people?
Do we have genuine broad international support?
"A prudent man looketh well at his doings", as you remember. And many a modern prophets predict prosperity to the country.
But if we turn to some medieval prophecies, many of them look really threatening. And first of all, it's the Arabic verse on the "City across the Ocean". In this City rulers would stand in office years each. And this perfectly matches the USA. But the second part of the verse says that the tragic number for them will be 44. If you remember well, George W. Bush is the 43rd US President. If Mr Powell runs for President in 2008, he risks to become the 44th. And here we have another prophecy, made by one of the Sioux chiefs. When the colonists took the land from his tribe, he said, that every fourth ruler of the new country will be killed or die during their term of office. And the prophecy worked quite correctly during the history. And at a first glance we may see that nothing good is in hand for the 44th chap in the White House. Will he be assassinated like Lincoln? Of course, the American are now far from their KKK ideas, but who knows, what problems the first Afro-American president may encounter? |
